How to Use Rye Straws
A rye straw is a natural stem, not a plastic tube. It rewards a little care in service.
Place it gently
Lower the straw into the drink rather than forcing it against the glass or garnish. Avoid sharply bending, squeezing or biting it. A natural stem can split if handled roughly.
Choose the right drink
- 5-inch: short cocktails, aperitifs and compact glassware.
- 8-inch: highballs, iced coffee, cold brew and tall cocktails.
- Best fit: thin drinks. Rye straws are not intended for thick, blended or shake-style drinks, or for forceful stirring.
Let the material be itself
Rye stems vary slightly in colour and diameter. That variation is part of using a natural material. Keep the cylinder closed between services so the loose, unwrapped straws remain covered.
A cocktail detail worth restoring
Straws appear in nineteenth-century drink service for beverages such as juleps and cobblers. For bartenders and guests who care about the history, presentation and ritual of a properly made drink, a rye straw restores a small but practical detail.
